Summer Whites

The ultimate summer neutral.

If there’s one color that truly belongs to summer, it’s white. Not just one white, but all of the shades, like crisp optic white, soft ivory, creamy ecru, warm bone and everything in between. Whether it’s an oversized linen shirt thrown over swimwear, a cotton poplin dress on a hot city day, or tailored separates for dinner.

The beauty of white is that texture can mix up any outfit, like a crisp cotton, airy linen, fluid silk, delicate crochet and lightweight knits all take on a different character when taken back to this clean, uncomplicated palette.

You’re supposedly meant to wait until Memorial Day to wear white, but I’ve never subscribed to that rule. It’s one of the more prominent colors in my wardrobe all year round. That said, there’s something about summer that makes every shade of it feel especially fresh.

Chanel made white chic in the ‘20s and ‘30s, pulling it out of the “undergarment” category and putting it on the same level as black, not just practical. Then Marilyn Monroe took that same white and made it pure spectacle, everyone knows that white halter dress billowing over the subway grate.
